Raychel Valdivia, Advot Alum

Raychel first encountered Advot when she was 17 years old and incarcerated at Camp Kenyon Scudder detention center. Raychel was grappling with anger issues, unable to think about her future amidst her challenges. “Advot taught me how to love myself,” Raychel said. “Through theatre I was able to express myself in ways that I couldn’t with words.”

Advot’s workshops guided Raychel to understand her true potential by seeing in her what she couldn’t yet see in herself: She was strong, talented, and had the power to shape her future. “I learned so much about the importance of positive self-talk.” Advot’s workshops empowered her to tap into her natural strengths, providing support and guidance every step of the way.

Through her time with Advot, Raychel discovered a natural talent for using acting as a way to express herself. She became the first alum hired as the coordinator of our alumni program and was honored with the "Phoenix Rising Award" for overcoming adversity at her high school graduation.

“Everyday I look in the mirror and tell myself I am beautiful, I am strong, and I am capable because I am. Every morning I do this, I think of Advot. Advot has left an imprint on who I am today, and everyday I am passing these lessons onto my daughter.”

Her voice is her power: Today, Raychel is a mom and talented entrepreneur. She is driven by a desire to build a better future for her daughter, and use her voice to speak up and fight for what her family needs.
