Jacob Weisz, Advot Alum

Jacob’s time with Advot’s Home Shalom program in high school was a significant transformation. Jacob was experiencing loneliness, detachment, and turbulent friendships. Through our workshops, he was able to explore connection, better communication tools, and community.

“Home Shalom was impactful for me because I was having a hard time sorting out my emotions the year after the lockdown and felt really disconnected from my Jewish community as well as my emotions,” Jacob remembers. In-Home Shalom, he found a supportive space to confront and process these emotions.

Through his involvement with Home Shalom, Jacob not only learned to navigate the complexities of his emotions and relationships but also discovered a newfound sense of self:

“I was able to fully reflect inwards and process the emotions I didn't know I was suppressing. Home Shalom gave me the opportunity to work on communication skills in an accepting community of kids my age.” This transformative experience not only validated his feelings but also empowered him to advocate for himself and express his truths without fear or shame.

After months of isolation and turbulent relationships, Home Shalom provided Jacob with a sense of home where he felt truly seen: “I felt not only supported among my peers but also a sense of belonging. I think that was not only due to the amazing group of people I was working with but also experiencing the safety that a Jewish community can bring.”

His voice is his power: As a marine biology student at UC Santa Cruz, Jacob has excelled academically–even securing a spot on the dean’s list–and has continued to build on the emotional insights he gained during his time with Home Shalom.
